Billy Black’s Outcast Theatre 1991-1992

Long before Billy Burke ever “stumbled onto a film set” as he puts it, he began writing and performing original music.

After his experience with Hand In Hand, his first “real band”, he formed another group around what he called a “caricature of himself” and named it Billy Black’s Outcast Theatre. Doing as their moniker suggested, they soon had a distinctly prominent yet largely underground following in Seattle.

Joseph Malik, one of the band members, once said: “Imagine a dirtier, sexier Squeeze. I’ll always contend that we were in the wrong town at the right time.”
In 2017, he also shared a picture of the group and one of their songs — “Dead Summer” where, his words, you can hear “a young Charlie Swan sing some sexy-ass rock and roll.”

the hat & cane sessions

In 1992 the band released a collection of five songs via Blackball Entertainment: “The Hat & Cane Sessions” . The lyrics were written by Billy while the music was composed by Billy and The Theatre together. The EP included “Dead Summer”.

From the past he arose, with a chocolate nose
And the smile of the Cheshire Cat bitin’ his tongue
Makin’ no tracks and totin’ no conversation
He said, “I’ll buy you a drink, or at least I think I will”
And turned to the woman with a hand in her purse
He was so smooth, he didn’t even have to kiss her

‘Cause the broad with the bread was an old redhead
Tryin’ to hide a couple nasty crow’s feet

And as she picked up the tab for me and the lad, he said
“I’ve got someone I’d like you to meet – this is my Sugar Mamma”

So we sucked down the drinks, and with the toss of a wink he said
“Don’t worry, Mama, we’ll be right back”
And we slipped off to find another situation
Found some dangerous damsel with a pierced left nipple and a virginal friend
And they said, “Hey, let’s take it on back to your place”
He said, “My place isn’t the best idea…” Just then someone planted on me a kiss
I turned my head to find ol’ Red mumblin’, “Hey kids Mama’s door is open to this”
“Let’s go to Sugar Mamma’s”

I woke up naked, my legs all snaked up with a red-headed Mama pushin’ forty or more
I was so smooth, I didn’t even have to kiss her
Well, would it be too much to ask for the price of a pack of Camels
Or a Black Velvet on the rocks? Or a new suit?
…Or maybe I just want to fuck you

Cause those young chicks with those bedroom aerobics
May keep you for a night and a day
But I’m tired of work, and I’m tired of jerkin’ off, I think I know an easier way
…I’ll friend a Sugar Mamma

I hear the spits on hallowed ground
Lifts her skirt and holds her down
The people in building ‘R’, just Ten Feet South
The dinner table hears a ghost
That M, N, O, P, Q don’t know
The cinderblock just can’t contain the sound

I hear the licks the candles from her birthday cake
Conjures up some frosting,
And the snake
Goes Ten Feet South

Well, I bet he shows her magazines
Cherubic figures in their teens
Makes her wear her hair in ponytails
Why don’t you come and sit on Daddy’s knee
Sit that fat butt down on me
Lemme show you the secret I just can’t keep

‘Cause when Daddy makes the pages stick together
He never bothers to make sure the window shade
Hangs Ten Feet South

A little table dance on all fat fours
Will make the snake begin to snore
And slither down the armchair for a snooze
And while the fangs drown in the glass
The over flies open, she trips on the gas
She laughs, and cries, and finally goes to sleep

An when Daddy wakes up, he won’t know the difference
He just won’t conjure up no frosting
And the snake
Stays Ten Feet South

They call me guilty, Mr. I’ll-Do-Anything-Wrong
Sitting in that frozen pose and whistlin’ a dead man’s song
Don’t people automatically think I’m way too serious?

No concentration, keep no span of attention around
Worry about everything and nothing will happen, I’ve found
I’ve gotta find a method to break this endless season
Dead Summer gonna find me on the road…

Ain’t no use in pleasin’ no one
Do what you want, that’s all I know
Where is my passion and devotion?
I hope that someone lets me know

Packin’ up my best impersonation of me I know
Leapin’ off a shallow illustration of ashes and coal
Take a bite of moldy apprehension, tastes like ‘So Long’
Say goodbye to Mr. Guilty, Mr. I’ll-Do-Anything-Wrong
I’m workin’ on a method to break this endless season
Dead Summer gonna find me on the road…

Ain’t no use in pleasin’ no one
Do what you want, that’s all I know
Where is my passion and devotion?
Well, I hope that someone lets me know

Be-Bop-A-Doo-Ya, said the spider on the side of the road
I really thought I knew ya, you look just like a spider I know
I bet you’re here in search of passion and devotion
Just stay on the road, keep goin’ – ain’t no use in pleasin’ no one
I’m headed for the borderline of this endless season
Dead Summer gonna find me on the road…

Ain’t no use in pleasin’ no one
Do what you want, that’s all I know
Where is my passion and devotion?
I hope that someone lets me know

I’d like to take you home and make a bunch of babies
Get married, get a quick divorce, and save time
You’ll call me lots of names, I’ll ignore you when you’re lonely
What a lovely life we’ll have, oh,

Lover, oh, Lover, Dear
You’ll catch me with another
And I’ll feel so trapped and smothered
We’ll just have to kill each other

Twice the lethal dose, I’ll take mine without a chaser
You’ll take your Bloody Mary extra bloody
We’ll sit here in the bar, play some word assassination
Comfort one another with hatred

Lover, oh, Lover, Dear
I’ll catch you with another
And you’ll feel so trapped and smothered
We’ll just have to kill each other

And I like to torture myself with you when I can
So I’ll take a random dictation of things I can’t stand about you
It’ll make me so happy…

Please don’t take this wrong, but I’d like to cut your tongue out
I’m sure you’d like to take a slice at me too
I’ll dismember you, and you can dis my member
God, I love this neat arrangement

Lover, oh, Lover, Dear
You’ll catch me with another
And I’ll feel so trapped and smothered
We’ll just have to kill each other

Lover, oh, Lover, Dear
I’ll catch you with another
And you’ll feel so trapped and smothered
We’ll just have to kill each other

I’d like to take you home and make a bunch of babies
Get married, get a quick divorce, and save time
You’ll call me lots of names, I’ll ignore you when you’re lonely
What a lovely life we’ll have

Take me on a tour of past lives
Be my chauffeur, you, the night
Wonder, too, as I do, where we came from
And who would point the finger at us
Should we change our minds
Surrender nothing, live on and on

For all we want is to take the offering
To feast like kings, and never get old
And never die…

Come with me, the night, old friend
An we will never die

Out of breath, and squalid
Distilling cryptic fancies, I,
Here in the bogs of poison daylight
Chase me down unheard-of footways
Take me with you, evening, chum
Render us fables both, eternal

I’m not convinced that this ain’t the Holy Land
Where outcasts reign and never get old
And never die…

I’ll go with you, the night, old friend
An we will never die
